Stepping up productivity at NIS
Ten representatives from NIS attended The Eighth Annual Yorkshire Productivity Awards held at the Royal Armouries, Leeds on Thursday 19th May to collect an award on behalf of the company.
Following a year of significant enhancement of NIS' operations, a 5S award for the large company category was received in recognition of the efforts of the business delivery teams in improving efficiency and setting a shining example of productivity.

NIS' entry for the awards focussed on three main tasks; a series of audits of the main office, organisation of specific areas of the workshop, and implementation of an action plan to dismantle, pack and store a major project. All of this lead to substantial increases in 5s scores, better project efficiencies and annual lost time savings of well over £1800, which goes to demonstrate the power of the 5s system when properly utilised.
As well as 5S work, NIS has recognised the need to encourage numerous other improvements to support the growth of the firm. In 2010, nine employees successfully completed their Team Leading NVQ, clearly demonstrating a thirst in the workforce to embrace change. Consequently, Business Improvement Techniques (BIT) training was initiated to drive further progression, and 12 employees completed the BIT Levels 2 and 3 qualifications earlier this year. To keep up the positive momentum of change in the business, the Senior Management Team has now decided to roll out BIT throughout the organisation, paving the way for many more improvements to come.
