Exploring fusion energy in Europe
Exciting new technologies are being researched for harnessing nuclear power as an energy source in a different way; and NIS are looking to get involved in the construction of a new wave of nuclear power plants. As an extension of the work NIS has completed over the past 28 years to become a known supplier in the nuclear fuel cycle and decommissioning markets, the company is now looking to branch out into the emerging new build industry, which includes the area of possibilities in fusion.
After registering an interest with the work led by Fusion For Energy (F4E) for the ITER project, NIS attended a remote handling information day held in Barcelona, where F4E is headquartered. F4E presented their plans for a possible procurement strategy and NIS was there to underline an eagerness for participation in the supply chain as an SME, making contact with potential partners in alliances and consortia.
NIS were featured in the June issue of the CCFE's (Culham Centre for Fusion Energy) magazine, Fusion Business, as one of the thirteen UK companies that attended the event, and NIS Business Development Manager Phil Monks was photographed with the other participants.

Following further discussions with NIS regarding some of the capabilities required for the challenging and complex work packages involved for the ITER system, representatives from F4E recently visited NIS' workshop and design centre at the UK base in Chorley. Phil Monks is in charge of new business within the nuclear sector and commented - "In recent months we have been in regular contact with F4E, helping them to establish a better understanding of the services our company can offer for the tasks on ITER. Hopefully we will be able to demonstrate our ability and act as ambassadors for promoting UK engineering skills to this massive international project".
