NIS are host to the Nuclear Ventilation Forum
NIS was pleased to host the first quarter 2010 meeting of the Nuclear Ventilation Forum. This took place on the 20th of January at NIS headquarters in Chorley, Lancashire. Managing Director of the Group, Chris Nicholson welcomed the delegates and gave an opening speech which was well received.
The Nuclear Vent Forum is represented by a cross section of principal designers, design authorities, suppliers and regulators seeking to rationalise design standards for the benefit of the nuclear ventilation industry as a whole.
Historically, the industry based design standards on a template, known as the AECP1054 standard, which was produced and updated in the 1970's and 80's. However, the last two decades have seen a shift to individual standards produced by each sector of the industry with differences and ambiguities present in each.
As a result, the Nuclear Vent Forum has developed a new design standard named NVF/DG001, based on a refined version of AECP1054. This is intended for new build and refurbishment projects initially and will shortly be joined by a supplementary guide embodying similar principles but focussed on the decommissioning branch of the industry. As the original AECP1054 standard did not lend itself to decommissioning work, this should prove to be a very useful set of guidelines for the field. The sum of these two parts will form a new cohesive standard which will be updated and enhanced as required to ensure it remains at the forefront of industry demands. It is hoped that other speciality documents will also be published as new needs are identified.
This quarter's meeting was very well attended and the NVF chairman John Keeton expressed thanks to NIS for hosting the event.
