NIS utilising HVAC expertise

Following the successful hosting of the Nuclear Ventilation Forum's first meeting of 2010 at NIS headquarters in Chorley, NIS' HVAC specialist Jim Axtell will be presenting a case study at the next quarterly meeting in Dounreay.

The Nuclear Vent Forum (NVF) is represented by a cross section of principal designers, design authorities, suppliers and regulators seeking to rationalise design standards for the benefit of the nuclear ventilation industry as a whole.

Jim will present a paper based on NIS' design experiences of the Sellafield B229 Lab 195 project. The project consists of a semi-rigid containment structure to be built within the laboratory to allow decommissioning of gloveboxes which have been handling plutonium samples.

The containment utilises the existing laboratory walls but with a temporary panelled ceiling sealed in. The containment is accessed via a shower/decontamination unit arranged with a containment airflow using a mobile fan filter. The containment and extraction are designed to satisfy the latest Sellafield standards and also the design guide recently issued by the Nuclear Vent Forum. Also, preparatory work is to be carried out to allow the installation of the new apparatus, using temporary tent arrangements in the removal of redundant equipment. The project has been reviewed and supported by Sellafield Limited's ventilation design authority Dr Ray Doig.
